Thurles Sarsfields Press Release International Hurling Festival

The third Thurles Sarsfields International Hurling Festival to be held at Munster hurling final week-end, July 12th and 13th, was officially launched by the Minister of State for Sport and Tourism, Alan Kelly TD at Sarsfields Social Centre, Thurles, on Friday night May 31st.

Forty teams will be competing for the Semple, Carew, and O Mara Cups over the two days, including teams from St Louis and Indianapolis in the United States, Great Britain, Northern Ireland, and from counties in Ireland where hurling is not the number one game.

The festival is a flagship event in North Tipperary for “The Gathering”, the IPB Insurance sponsored government initiative to encourage Irish people abroad to holiday at home this year.

The festival  will feature sixteen teams taking part in the Tom Semple Cup with the Jackie Carew Cup going to the winners of the B section. Eight camogie teams will be taking part in the Helen O Mara Cup competition and a new feature this year is an inter-pubs Caman Abu tournament, recreational hurling for people who have never played the game or who no longer do so.

Road Bowling will take centre stage on the opening day of the festival with many of the top exponents of the game in action. There will also be a competition  for local “celebrities”.

John Enright, chairman of the Thurles Sarsfields  organising committee, welcomed the backing of IPB Insurance for the festival which, he said, puts a focus on Thurles as a  tourism centre, with the focus on hurling.

” We believe an event like ours which builds on the great hurling tradition in the area, has immense tourism potential. We are appealing to the public to encourage their family members who are abroad, to come home for the festival. We can assure them of a great weekend’s sport and entertainment”, he said.

Attracta Lyons, Community and Enterprise Development Officer with North Tipperary Co Council, said this is an exciting opportunity for us all to play our part in showing what is best about our county and people.” We can reach out to our friends and loved ones overseas and invited them home. This is going to be an incredible year in Ireland and we want North Tipperary to be part of it”, she added.

Joe McGrath, Manager of North Tipperary Co Council said – The exciting programme showcases the sporting and cultural heritage of our county and will be a great boost for the local economy.

Ronan Foley, CEO ,IPB Insurance,  said that IPB Insurance is proud to be partners in this fantastic initiative. “I believe  “The Gathering”   will reap long term economic and social benefits for the country”, he added
